About
I'm Tucker, a software engineer with too many hobbies.
I started writing code at five, using QBasic and Windows Batch Scripting on a Windows 98 machine my dad gave me. I laddered up into Game Maker, Java, and eventually more advanced programming languages as I grew older. I had a small homelab in the basement (much to the dismay of my parents' energy bill) and eventually graduated from Rose-Hulman with a double major in Software Engineering and Computer Science in 2019.
My current interest is extreme electronics reuse and upcycling. I enjoy taking older devices - possibly at a component level - salvaging parts and repurposing them for new projects. If I can reuse something in my parts bin instead of giving Adafruit or Mouser more money, it's a good day. I like to keep things out of the landfill and reuse is the best way.
Professional Experience
- Appfolio - 2024-Present - Full stack development contributing to Appfolio's Student Housing and Affordable Housing features.
- Notion/Pepper - 2023-2024 - Worked on the Notion platform, focusing on backend systems and data ingestion pipelines for IoT sensors.
- Groupon - Summer Intern 2017, 2018, Full-time 2019-2023 - Initially worked on the frontend Deal Page, and later transitioned to working on and eventually owning the Users Service (the service responsible for User Authentication and Account Lifecycle).
Unprofessional Experience
My personal projects are all over the place, ranging from hardware hacking to software development and everything in between. I often step out of the technical and make short films or even music, sometimes. You can see it all on my YouTube channel.
In the past, I would try and clone products that impressed me. I've tried forking Visopsys to make my own operating system that wasn't based on Linux (inspired by Mac OS X Leopard), I've tried making my own clone of Google Maps, and I've also experimented with my own version of iCloud. None of these projects ever reached a polished state - I wrote them while I was in middle school and high school - but these projects have taught me a lot about software development and all levels. And, you know... college did that too, I guess.
Coverage
I've been covered in various media outlets and online platforms for my work and projects.
- The Mactini project was covered by Hackaday, hackster.io, and several other places that I'm pretty sure are AI generated because they get some details wrong.
- The iPad Touch Screen Upcycling project was covered by Hackaday.
- The iPod Nano 3rd Generation Bluetooth project was covered by Hackaday.
- The first part of the iPod Nano 3rd Generation 16GB upgrade was covered by Hackaday.
